   Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is dentistry's first specialty. This specialty is concerned with the correction of disproportions of jaws and alignment of teeth both in children as well as adults to improve their facial esthetics, smile, oral health and function.

The department is headed by Dr. Sumitra, a Diplomate of Indian Board of Orthodontics. The post-graduate program in this specialty was established in 2007. Since its inception, it has shown continuous progress towards excellence in teaching, patient care and research in the field of orthodontics. The strength of the department is a highly dedicated team of teachers with academic laurels, enthusiastic to teach with student-centric innovative methods of teaching. The major emphasis is on excellent clinical training with contemporary techniques and research. Research is an integral part of the curriculum. The postgraduate students have won awards at national level for their innovative presentations.

The main focus of the teaching program is to train them in acquiring self-assisted lifelong learning skills. Globally accepted student-centric innovative methods of teaching are used to train the students. The training program enables them to prepare for examinations at a global level.

   Postgraduate Orthodontic Program
Postgraduate Orthodontic Program commenced in the year 2007 and the results have been 100% till date. Postgraduate curriculum includes six months of pre-clinical work followed by two and a half years of clinical training.Three students are selected each year for admission into the post graduate program in Orthodontics. The Orthodontic program provides the students with a sound didactic background in craniofacial biology and growth and development. Students are exposed to many different Orthodontic techniques and appliances. They are introduced to a multidisciplinary approach to treatment that includes TMD diagnosis and treatment, surgical-orthodontic treatment, and pre- and post-restorative orthodontic treatment.

Postgraduate students gain experience in the treatment of patients with all types of dentofacial deformities. The Orthodontic program also provides its students with experience as instructors, teaching both laboratory and clinical orthodontics to undergraduate dental students. The postgraduates must conduct an original research project during their three years in the program. At the end of the project, they must prepare a written paper about their study and defend their thesis to a panel of faculty members.Through an extensive series of lectures, seminars, and case conferences, a comprehensive didactic background in relevant basic sciences and clinical orthodontics is provided to the students.

   Vision
To uphold the Department of Orthodontics through excellence in our teaching, research, patient care and service programs.

   Mission
  • It is the primary mission of the department to improve oral health by preserving and enhancing facial esthetics, oral function, self-esteem, overall health of the patients and service of the community.

  • Student- centric innovative methods of teaching to provide them with a broad scientific foundation, a thirst for knowledge, and the ability to critically assess and implement the scientific advances.

  • Evidence based orthodontic practice for substantial experience in clinical care.

  • Value based education for instilling moral and ethical values.

   Undergraduate Program - BDS

The undergraduate program of instruction in the department  is directed toward providing the dental student with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize a developing or established malocclusion, provide preventive and therapeutic treatment within the scope of the general dental practice, consult as a team member with the specialist, refer cases requiring specialist care as appropriate, and coordinate comprehensive care of the patient.

   Postgraduate Program - MDS

The department trains MDS students with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct ethical, patient-centered and evidence based orthodontic practice. The strength of the department is excellent clinical training with a variety of cases. The students have substantial experience in clinical care by treating sufficient number of cases with different malocclusions.

A team of highly qualified and dedicated full-time faculty supervises treatment of a wide variety of orthodontic patients, including patients with skeletal disharmony problems, medically compromised patients and special children. The students learn latest and diverse interdisciplinary approaches to treat different clinical problems. The curriculum is composed of seminars, journal clubs, and small-group instruction with emphasis on critical thinking about scientific content of the articles on new concepts of treatment. Research is an integral part of the postgraduate curriculum as they have to complete a dissertation to be eligible to take the final examination. The students are well trained in research methodology to implement evidence-based decision making in their professional careers.

The students present research /clinical papers and clinical innovations at national scientific conventions. They are trained to publish research/ clinical articles following ICMJE guidelines. All the contemporary techniques i.e., pre adjusted edgewise appliances, lingual appliances, self- ligating appliances, clear aligners and mini- implants are taught and complex malocclusions are treated in conjunction with orthognathic surgery.

The post graduate students are trained beyond syllabus to take Indian Board of Orthodontics (IBO) examination. IBO conducts a post PG peer reviewed examination for clinical excellence at national level every year. They take Phase II theory examination in the second year of training. They are trained to present their final year examination cases in a manner similar to IBO examination. They can take phase III IBO examination after five years of completing their course. The training imparted to them enables them to prepare their cases for the Board examination and other examinations at a global level.

All the alumni of the department are employed at teaching institutes / successfully self employed or practicing at hospitals/ working abroad.

   Research and academic activities

Research is an integral part of the postgraduate training program. The department has 36 completed research projects and 16 ongoing research projects. The fields of research are growth modification, miniscrew implants, finite element model analysis, bonding materials,  and Cone beam volumetric tomography. The students present research papers in conferences.

The department has 52 publications in national and international journals. The head of the department has passed the Phase III examination of Indian Board of Orthodontics in 2008.  Four post graduate students have won awards at the National Post Graduate conventions for their innovative presentations. Continuing dental education programs and workshops are conducted regularly every year. The faculty participate in lectures and presentations at conferences. They have served as the resource persons for several continuing dental education programs also.
