   Research and Academic Activities

Ongoing research projects:

  1. Low-cost oral mobile cancer screening for low resource setting (NIH Project in collaboration with University of Arizona)
  2. Evaluation of autofluorescence image guided surveillance of oral potentially malignant disorders and development of prediction model for risk assessment in malignant transformation: A longitudinal observational study.
  3. Assessment of Artificial Neural Network classifier on oral potentially malignant disorders and oral cancer in a real-world settings-A prospective study.
  4. “Screen and Treat” – Oral Cancer Control program – A scale up approach

Completed research projects-

  1. A low-cost simple oral cancer screening device for low-resource setting (NIH-DBT)
  2. Clinical study of ‘Cellscope’ as a tele microscopy tool for oral cancer screening (in collaboration with Siemens Technology and University of California, Berkeley)
  3. Observation of oral premalignant and malignant lesions using exogenous fluorophores and handheld fluorescent imaging (in collaboration with University of Minnesota)
  4. Ex-vivo molecular imaging of oral potentially malignant and malignant lesion using PARPi-Fl.
  5. Low-cost, portable and contemporaneous optical imaging technology in oral cancer diagnosis (in collaboration with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre)

Patent filed: Molecular Marker based oral cytology for detection of potentially malignant and malignant oral lesions

Research grants received:

Capacity building initiatives undertaken by the department

  1. A “Master training program” for 38 medical officers from different districts of Karnataka, who were District Coordinators and Tobacco Cessation Counsellors were trained for early oral cancer detection in association with state tobacco control cell and Non-Communicable Diseases Cell, Department of Health and Family welfare, Government of Karnataka & Biocon Foundation.
  1. Training of Frontline healthcare providers (ASHAs, General dentists, Interns, medical and paramedics) for early detection of oral cancer.
  2. Online training module developed for early detection of oral cancer for interns and final year students.
