Medical microbiology is the study of micro organisms which cause human infections like the Bacteria, Fungi , Parasites & Viruses . The subject is one of the most widely studied & followed branches of microbiology due to the importance to the field of medicine & dentistry. It involves study of disease pathology, immunology , diagnosis, treatment & prevention of the infectious diseases.
Pathology is the study of diseases . General Pathology deals with causes , disease process & effect of common diseases. Dental students ought to know the basis of all diseases in order to understand the clinical presentation , signs & symptoms , diagnosis & outcome of all diseases. It deals with various abnormalities , genetic , developmental , infective , immunological , metabolic & neoplastic disorders. A good understanding of General Pathology is absolutely necessary for a sound clinical practice. |

The department of Pathology & Microbiology is in the sixth floor of the medical sciences block. It has a well ventilated & well lit spacious lab which can accommodate 35 students . It also has a separate preparation & storage area. The lab caters to the development of practical skills for the undergraduate dental students. It is well equipped with 35 monocular microscopes, 01 binocular microscope, 10 formalin preserved pathology specimens, colourful & informative charts on various subject- related topics. It also houses an Autoclave, an Incubator , a Hot Air Oven & a Refrigerator for aseptic preparation & storage of bacteriological media for practical as well as diagnostic purposes.
The lab provides all that is necessary for hands on training in practical pathology & microbiology like different staining techniques to observe microorganisms , demonstration of cultural characters of common pathogens, analysis of blood & urine , histopathological identification of common diseases & a hold on using the common tools & instruments . |
